Memory speed, ranks and population rules
The memory speed printed on the box is a maximum. What the server actually runs at depends on the CPU's memory controller, how many DIMMs sit on each channel and whether the modules are single, dual or quad rank. A poorly populated server can lose a quarter of its memory bandwidth without any warning in the OS.
The basic rules are the same across vendors: fill every channel before adding a second DIMM to any channel, use identical modules, and check the platform's population table for the speed penalty at two or three DIMMs per channel.

You probably went from 1 to 2 DIMMs per channel or introduced a different rank count, both of which drop the speed grade. Check the population table.

It runs at 2933. It is not wasted if that is the only stock available, but you should not pay a premium for it.
