Server memory

DDR4 RDIMM

DDR4 RDIMMs power the largest installed base of servers in the field today, from the PowerEdge R730 through the R750 and the ThinkSystem SR650 V2. Most businesses running a three to seven year old server can double memory affordably because DDR4 pricing has fallen so far.

The catch is compatibility across generations. A 2133 MT/s module from a 13G box will not run in a 15G server that expects 3200 MT/s, and single-rank versus dual-rank mixes change the maximum supported speed.

How we work

A memory engagement starts with evidence, not a parts list. We pull utilization from your monitoring or hypervisor, confirm memory is the real constraint, and only then choose modules that keep every channel populated at full speed.

Firmware comes first. BIOS and BMC updates fix memory training bugs and unlock newer module types, so we baseline them before opening the chassis. Installation is scheduled in a maintenance window and validated with a memory test and an application check before the server goes back into rotation.

Parts are new or tested refurbished with a warranty, matched to the vendor's qualified list or an equivalent specification, and we keep a record of exactly what went where so the next upgrade starts from documentation rather than guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

My R730 shows a memory warning but still runs. Is it urgent?

Correctable errors mean the ECC is doing its job, but the rate usually climbs. Schedule a replacement of that DIMM before it becomes an uncorrectable error and a crash.

Can a 14G server use 13G memory?

Only if the module speed and rank match what the CPU supports. PowerEdge 14G wants 2666 or 2933 MT/s RDIMMs; older 2133 parts are typically rejected.
