Field notes

E3.S drives are not interchangeable with U.2; confirm carrier and drive form factor before ordering. PCIe 5 NVMe at full load needs 100 GbE or better to matter. Firmware via BMC or SUM. Typical OS is Linux with SPDK, Ceph or a commercial SDS stack.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose Supermicro over Dell or Lenovo?

Price per performance, unusual form factors (GPU, storage-dense, multi-node, edge) and flexibility. The trade-off is less hand-holding from the vendor, which is where we come in.

Do Supermicro servers have remote management?

Yes. Every server-class board has a BMC with IPMI, Redfish and a web console; X13/H13 use the ASPEED AST2600 with HTML5 KVM. A licence key may be needed for BIOS updates via the BMC on older boards.

Can the SuperStorage SSG-121E-NE316R run a current operating system?

Check the field notes above. As a rule, current models are certified for Windows Server 2022/2025, ESXi 8 and RHEL 9; legacy models usually stop at Windows Server 2019 or ESXi 7 and may need Proxmox or an older Linux to stay useful.
