The user docked their laptop and only one screen came on. Or both came on yesterday and today one is black. This ticket is common because a modern desk has a laptop, a dock, two cables and two monitors, and any one of those six things can be the cause.
Work from the cable outward, know which kind of dock you are dealing with, and keep the firmware current. Most of these are fixed in a few minutes without a driver reinstall.
Cable and port first
Press Win+P and make sure the mode is Extend, not PC screen only. Then open Settings > System > Display and click Detect under Multiple displays. If the monitor still does not appear, swap the cable with one that is known to work, and try the other video port on the dock. Cheap HDMI and USB-C cables fail more often than anything else on the desk.
Check that the port on the laptop supports video. Not every USB-C port carries DisplayPort; the ones that do usually have a small DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol next to them. Plugging the dock into a charge-only or data-only port gives you power and USB but no screens, which is exactly the symptom.
The three kinds of dock
Docks look alike but work differently, and the troubleshooting differs. Thunderbolt and USB4 docks carry full video bandwidth and need the laptop's Thunderbolt controller and driver to be working; they show up in the Thunderbolt or USB4 control panel. USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode docks are simpler and pass the laptop's own video signal through, so the number and resolution of monitors is limited by the laptop's port. DisplayLink docks use a USB graphics chip and need the DisplayLink driver installed; without it, the extra monitors never appear at all.
Find out which one you have from the model number, then check the matching thing: the Thunderbolt driver and firmware, the port capability, or the DisplayLink driver. Firmware matters for all three. Driver and Windows fixes
When the physical chain is fine, restart the graphics driver with Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. The screen blinks and often the missing monitor appears. If not, open Device Manager and look under Monitors and Display adapters for warning icons. Ghost monitors from previous docks can confuse Windows; enable Show hidden devices under View and uninstall the greyed-out monitor entries.
Update the graphics driver from the laptop vendor first, and only from the GPU vendor if the laptop vendor's driver is old. Turn off Fast startup under Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do, because it keeps a stale hardware state across shutdowns and causes exactly this kind of dock confusion. Then do a full shutdown, unplug the dock's power for thirty seconds, reconnect everything and start again.

Symptoms include one monitor limited to 30 Hz, flickering, or a second monitor that disappears when a USB device is plugged in.
Check Settings > System > Display > Advanced display for the active refresh rate and the signal type. Drop the second monitor to a lower resolution or refresh rate as a test. If that fixes it, the answer is a Thunderbolt dock, a second cable direct from the laptop's HDMI port, or accepting the lower rate. Daisy-chaining monitors over DisplayPort MST works only if the laptop and the first monitor both support it.
Standardise the desk
The lasting fix is to stop having six variables. Pick one dock model per laptop model, buy cables from the same vendor as the dock, and label the ports users should plug into. Put the dock firmware in your regular update cycle alongside the laptop drivers. A standard desk setup means the same fix works every time and users can swap desks without a ticket.
